Woman Gives Birth 3 Hours After Doctors Tell Her She's Pregnant

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

A British woman became a mother for the first time just three hours after doctors discovered she was pregnant, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Belinda Waite, 21, had been in and out of hospital for nine months after being told she was suffering from a severe case of irritable bowel syndrome and gout.

It was only after she was admitted to hospital in severe pain on Feb. 6 that doctors realized she was expecting.

They told Waite she was around three months pregnant and sent her back home to Bampton, Devon in the U.K., just before midnight.

But a few hours later, baby Louise arrived weighing a healthy 8 pounds, 14 ounces to the amazement of Waite and her boyfriend, Wayne Boyles.

"I did feel like something was moving inside me as the months went on," Waite said. "But I never considered I was pregnant — and it doesn't seem to have crossed the doctors' minds."

Socialized medicine at its best

No kidding, rofl. How can you NOT know you are pregnant. I mean....umm....maybe I'm wrong here as I"m not a woman. But don't you typically have menstrual cycles every month and lots of blood and other gross stuff comes out?

But it is possible a woman can be so fat as to not realize they are pregnant by looking at them. I knew a lady at church that was extremely obese. When she was talking about how she was soon to deliver her 5th child in a few weeks, I about choked and said, "You're pregnant?" I felt rather stupid afterwords saying that as that was very tactless, but she replied, "Yes, you didn't realize I was pregnant?" The lady was in her 9th month and I had had no clue that she was pregnant. After she had the baby, I couldn't tell she had had the baby either.

So from a purely visual perspective, I can understand missing it. But from the medical aspect...there is no excuse for the doctor missing that, or for the mother not having a clue that she was pregnant.

The Doctors looked at her, could not believe even for a second that anyone would ever have sex with her, and gave a gout diagnosis :D

I've heard stories about women having something resembling a period while pregnant, but nothing that I can confirm firsthand. Maybe the woman had something like that, or was on one of those one-a-year BC pills....

here in the usa if a woman goes to the dr much less a hospital if she has any blood work done at all they include a pregnancy test.... just in case.... even if she says"I have zero chance of being pregnant" because people do not always tell the truth  and being pregnant really affects the diagnosis and treatment. But apparently in Britain a women is not given these kinds of diagnostic tests

Isn't part of the reason health care costs are so high is because we run so many extra tests "just in case" when the overwhelming majority of the time they aren't needed?

yea, thats why we need tort reform so doctors aren't so scared of missing something and getting sued that they test for a billion things that they know isn't the problem. I wouldn't consider pregnancy one that is unnecessary though and it is really easy to test for.

I had a roommate in college who had a girlfriend who was rail thin. The girl was a stick. They didn't know she was pregnant until she was almost at full term. She didn't show at all.

It's a double whammy, not only are the doctors doing the extra tests so they don't get sued but they also make more money from them. Which in turn insurance pays for which raises premiums.

There's actually a show my lady watches occasionally called "I didn't know I was pregnant". I personally think you've got to be an idiot not to notice something of that magnitude happening to your body - and most of the time the girl SHOULD have known but was in serious doubt and needed a slap upside the head.

Alot of meds the doctor might use to treat an ailment can hurt the baby so that is a big reason for testing.
