Post by: Tesla on September 27, 2018, 06:29:26 pm
This is a good article breaking down what to expect from the new game. It releases in Nov. This might be something to check out.

how many people can play together?

Apparently 24 players per server and 4 players per team if I am reading this article correctly.

https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/06/fallout-76-supports-24-players-in-each-game/ (https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/06/fallout-76-supports-24-players-in-each-game/)

When Bethesda confirmed that Fallout 76 would be a multiplayer game, Todd Howard didn't specify how large the multiplayer component would be. But in the recent documentary with NoClip, Bethesda revealed how many players will be able to play at once.

In the almost-40 minute documentary, embedded below, one of the Bethesda developers confirmed that each game instance will support 24 players per each server. "You're going to open up the paper map, and you're going to see where the other people are," Jeff Gardiner, a project lead at Bethesda Game Studios, said.

"Do you want to go help them ... do you want to try to shoot them, however our PvP system ends up working out ... all the servers are a 24 person instance, you load in, it'll be full of people," Gardiner added.

He added that there would be a trading system, and that the team limit right now was four players, although everything was adjustable internally. Fallout 76 is designed to be a live game, with the nuclear bunkers functioning as a cyclical end-game content of sorts for players.

I'm going to hold off pending your review. I am a little turned off by the 24 person limit. That's about half of what I was hoping for.

Well Bethesda's launcher allowed people to pre-download the game for the beta test. An hour before the beta started, all PC versions were deleted, and now everyone has to re-download the client. Because their servers are being hammered, they throttled the download speeds. I'm at 4.26 GB of 47.67GB at 1.85MB/Sec showing 6 hours and 47 mins to complete it. Reddit is blowing up with pissed off people. They are only having the beta running today from 7PM EST to 11PM EST. Next time to play is on freaking Thursday. I'm pretty upset myself, as I was really looking forward all day to coming home and playing it tonight. It is a big disappointment.  :wtf:

People are requesting they extend the beta hours as compensation for the screw up. So far there has been no response. :(

I will be sure to give a good write up on this, so everyone will be in the know.

So I pretty much played all day. Took a break for dinner. Made it to level 12. The game is basically Fallout with multiplayer. They have some interesting concepts that I like.

There are world events, not sure how these trigger, may be on a timer, but they are pretty cool. I worked with a bunch of people on two of them, it was a blast. The events are locked to certain POI's. Some are timed, some are defeat waves of enemies, some are defend locations, or certain items.

PVP is consensual, basically someone can attack you, but it does very little damage, if you return fire, PVP goes into full effect, and damage is full. If you die in pvp, you only lose junk, the rest of your gear stays with you. If you steal from someone's camp, the game puts a cap bounty on you, so other players can hunt you down and kill you for caps. If you are a griefer, you get labeled a murderer, and everyone on the map can see your location, and once again, you get a bounty payment for killing the murderer. If you don't want to bother with PVP, you can fast travel away from people harassing you. PVP does not start till you are lvl 5.

The map is huge(rumor has it 4 times the size of Fallout 4's map), I only managed to maybe explore a 1/4 of it in the time I played. POI's are shown on the world map, but you actually have to travel to them to unlock them. Fast travel is in the game, you cannot fast travel when you are over encumbered.

Weapons and Gear are level based now, so you can't equip someone with a Tesla Rifle, as you have to have the level requirement to use it. (but you can put it in your stash to use once you reach the level needed.) Crafting has a new concept. Each time you scrap a weapon or armor, you learn a new recipe for that weapon. Like a different hand grip, or barrel, or receiver, etc etc. So you don't have 10 .44 pistols laying around, you scrap them, and learn new pieces to modify the pistol. You can craft ammo in the game, so if you loot the right kind of junk, you can make bullets for your weapons.

You have to eat and drink in the game. Hunger and Thirst have adverse effects on you if left unchecked, and can kill you if you do not take care of it. It did not seem like a real chore to manage it.

You can get diseases in the game, eating spoiled or uncooked food, and just the general landscape. There are curses for them.

Base building: You get a device called a C.A.M.P. you place this on the ground, and it basically declares that area for you. You can build a base, and if you decide you found a better place for it, you can place the C.A.M.P. at a different location, and it will move your entire base intact to the new location. I really like this, at it prevents the game world being spammed with buildings everywhere. I really did not test this out very much, as I was super excited to just roam around doing quests, and exploring new areas.

SPECIAL:  As you level up, you place points into your SPECIAL stats. You also unlock perk cards. Perks cards are an interesting twist, you can swap these out with other cards on the fly to adjust your character build. Example: You have 4 in strength, you can equip 4 level 1 perk cards, or 2 level 2 cards, or any combination adding up to four. If you pick a card you already own, you can combine it to make a level 2 card and so on. (I combined two level 1 weaponsmith cards to make a level 2 weaponsmith card, which unlocked a bunch of weapon mods I could do) Perk cards are SPECIAL related, for instance, lock picking is under the perception stat, melee combat is under Strength stat. So in order to use certain perks, you have to have points in your stats.

There is basically dragon like creatures that fly around called Scorch Beasts. They kind of look like the bat demons from conan. They are world bosses per say, as they are level 50. They have a back story to them, and they contribute to a scorched disease. There are quests revolving around them. Like find a cure for the scorched disease. For instance, when one flew over the airport, an air raid siren went off, indicating it coming near.

Some of the locations I visited were breath taking. There is a working Nuclear power plant, Nuka Cola Plant, Airport, an Army basic training base, The New River Gap Bridge, Morgantown, Charleston. I was concerned that my system would not run the game, but it actually ran pretty good. I really did not have any issues. The game engine is beautiful.

Overall, I am very happy with the game. I really can't say there is anything that I do not like about it. I'm sure I am missing something. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

I have three Beta Keys available to anyone who wants to try it. These are for PC only.

Next beta event is today 5pm – 9 pm ET (1pm – 5 pm PT), and Sunday, November 4th, from 2pm – 9 pm ET (11am – 5 pm PT)

I work both days so I will not get much playing time with those stupid beta hours.  I am sending the Beta Keys to Pyl so he can manage distributing them while I am away.

Title: Re: Fallout 76
Post by: Tesla on November 09, 2018, 06:59:01 am
So I claimed a resource base last night to figure out how that works. It is a really cool game concept. Basically resource locations have a workbench like in Fallout 4. Once you clear the area of MOBS, you can claim the work bench. Once you do this, you are allocated some building components to start building in the resource area. Each one has nodes where you can harvest basic building mats. I chose the Charleston Junk Yard. It had an Aluminum, Steel, Copper, Junk, Water, and Food resource nodes.

Your resource gather equipment are node specific (I.E. one for gathering steel, one for gathering copper, etc etc.)  As long as they are not destroyed and the generators you have them hooked up to are running, they will produce material over time. Keep in mind, anyone can take items out of the resource harvesters, so it is wise to set up some defensive measures to deter people from wandering in and taking your stuff. You have to decide if you want to hang around and protect it, or wander off to do missions. At first I was like this is going to be boring, but I found out, that is not the case.

Once you claim the area, you have a building budget (To prevent you from building some crazy crap) You have to balance between defensive structures, and resource gathering structures. The game gives you a little bit of time to do this, and then the fun begins. At certain time intervals (Which I didn't really figure out) your resource base comes under attack. ( think Conan Exiles Purge) Except you have a set amount of waves you have to defend against, the AI is pretty good, I saw Super Mutants circumvent my turrets and walls to find a weak spot in my defences. They try to get inside and destroy your generators, harvesting equipment, or just try and kill you. In the time I was there, I was attacked by Ghouls, Mutant dog pack, and Super Mutants with Mutant beasts.

Upon successful completion of the defence event, you are awarded more building mats and experience. The cool thing about this is, not only can the AI attack you, but other players can attack you to make the claim. While the latter did not happen, (Most people were just running around exploring the map,  or just running around doing quests) I can see these being extremely fun after release. As they afford valuable resources, and give you a goal to raiding. (Conan Exiles you raid and loot, then leave) Here you can raid, loot, and take over the place.

I could envision while I was doing this having one person divert attention to the front of the base, while the others attack it from the rear. Fortunately for me, this was in the last hour of the beta, so it was not a big deal. I wanted to learn the mechanics of how it worked and to experience for myself. I found it to be a great addition to the game.

I do see the Poseidon Nuclear Power plant being heavily contested, as there is a Fusion Core resource there. Fusion Cores as you know, are the power source for Power Armor. I did manage to get three power armor frames, but you need to be at least level 25 to equip armor on the frames (T-45 power armor pieces) I think Raider Power armor pieces have a lower level requirement, but I did not manage to find any.

I did use my power armor frame for awhile (it affords more carry weight) I did really need to be careful, as I only had two fusion cores. Once you exit your power armor, it will automatically return to your inventory after about 60 seconds. (So if your run out of energy with fusion cores, your power armor is not stuck out in the middle of nowhere) The only thing that sucks about it is that it is heavy, and will weigh you down. Just like the single player games, being over your weight limit will prevent fast travel, and it drains your Action Points (stamina bar) over time.

I managed to build a small base, and then create a blueprint, so when I moved it to a different location on the map, I just selected the blueprint and positioned it on the ground and voila, base was moved intact with crafting stations. The only issue I found with this, and I think it is smart on Bethesda's behalf, you have to find an area that will support your blueprint, So if something is clipping into where you are trying to place it, it will not let you place it. Also you need to have all the building material to rebuild it. Concrete, steel, copper, wood, ect etc. So if you keep moving your base around, it's going to drain your building materials quickly. Keep in mind, you do not have to do this, you can place your C.A.M.P. on the ground and build a base however you please in the location you are at without using the blueprint. One thing to keep in mind, once you place your C.A.M.P. your previous base location is gone. I like this, as it prevents building spam. However, if your are part of a team, each individual could build their own base in certain locations.

So far with the limited time I got to play, I found it to be a very enjoyable experience. I did not get to experience any team or group play. I experienced very little PVP. I guess if I was to point to anything negative in the game would be that there are no NPC's. (Robots are the only exception, as I did find a bunch of protectrons at different locations that were friendly and gave missions and rewards) Most of your missions are derived from computer terminals, notes, and holotapes. While this could be seen as a negative, you could certainly take on the role of a npc vendor, charging caps for ammo, or armor upgrades, etc etc. In fact there was a guy on the server I was playing on that was upgrading people's weapons for caps and fusion cores.

I think I basically covered my experience. If you guys have any questions, let me know.

Here is a map of the game with the basic level of each area. I only managed to explore maybe 1/2 of the forest, and half of the Ash Heap. My base of operations was in the middle of the ash heap. You need a gas mask or respirator to walk around there. It was nice, as it kept alot of people out of there.

So let's say we have 8 people in SN playing Fallout 76. Everyone playing friends each other on Bethesda's client. We all log into discord and select one person as the designated join.

For instance, let's say Valen is the first person on Fallout 76 for the day. When everyone eventually gets on to play, you just select Valen to join, and it will put you in the same server he is on.
If he leaves, or logs out, just select from anyone else that joined the same game he was in.

Hopefully, Bethesda caves, and put in a server browser, or at least someone creates a mod for a server browser to make the process easier.  I never played Sea of Thieves with you guys, but apparently joining friends works like it does.

So we had some fun last night. Lead and I took over a resource settlement. Defended it from two attacks. We traveled back up north to assist Package on a couple of missions. We did a world event at the Morgantown Airport, waves of Scorched were trying to take out a cargobot. After we finished that, Package was building his CAMP, Lead and I took on some Super Mutants in a state penitentiary. So far we have been having alot of fun playing this.

An update is going out on Monday. Looks like the stash limit will not be in this update.

Lead, I found a reliable way to farm springs. I tested it out last night. I'm up to 94 of them now.

So the game is getting some really bad reviews. Is it just people who have no clue reviewing the game or are there issues?

A bunch of dumbasses really. The key complaint is there are no human NPCS, and the typical dialog trees the previous games had. It is a Multiplayer game, and quite frankly having the standard human NPCs and dialog trees does not make sense for this type of game. There are robot npcs in the game, but basically all humans in the game were wiped out by the Scorched Plague. I would not be surprised if Bethesda caves, and tries to somehow add them in the game via DLC. But at this point only time will tell.

The other problem people have bitching about is the Stash capacity. Currently it is 400 LBS. Tomorrow's patch is going to increase it to 600. They have said they plan to increase again, based on how the servers perform with the change to 600.

Another complaint is the CAMP building budget, currently it does not allow huge mega bases. In its current state, it allows you to build a small functional home to craft/repair.

They have been pretty good at patching any of the bug that have been reported. I have been enjoying the game. I'm currently level 69. You have to plan your SPECIAL build properly when you are leveling up, as once you hit lvl 50, you do not get anymore points to allocate to SPECIAL. You do still continue to gain perks, and you can switch them out on the fly, to adjust your build to the type of character you want to have.

I concur with the above. Been having fun with it.

Well, we would love to have you. Leadtail and I have been having a great time teaming up exploring and doing missions. Package played one night, but I can assume he is really busy with work/life. He seemed to enjoy it also. Lead and I teamed up with him to help on some missions.

Hi I'm going to hold off pending your review.
I am a little turned off by the 24 person limit.
That's about half of what I was hoping for.

Based on the size of the map, I am really surprised the player count per server is not higher. To be honest, I very seldom run into another person, unless it's in a high traffic area.
